Culture on the Menu | Episode 1

What happens when you’re doing everything people do in a relationship, but nobody wants to put a label on it?

Welcome to the first episode of Culture on the Menu, where we talk about and digest all things culture.

For our debut episode, we’re joined by Cyrus and Kevin for an honest, funny and sometimes vulnerable conversation about the realities of modern dating.

From situationships and sneaky links to emotional availability and the complicated world of DL men. We’re unpacking the expectations, experiences and unspoken rules that shape relationships within the queer community.

We explore how dating apps have changed the way we connect, why some people struggle to communicate their intentions and whether protecting your peace can sometimes become an excuse to avoid vulnerability.

Cyrus and Kevin also reflect on their personal experiences with heartbreak, long-distance connections, emotional unavailability and learning to distinguish between what we want in a partner and what we actually need.

The conversation goes deeper into masculinity, authenticity and the challenges of dating people who are at different stages of embracing their sexuality. We discuss the pressures of presenting a certain image, the difference between privacy and secrecy, and why genuine emotional connection requires more than physical attraction.

We also introduce our dating scenario game, “Is This a Stunt?”, where Cyrus and Kevin weigh in on questionable dating behaviour, mixed signals and situations that might sound a little too familiar.

    In This Episode, We Discuss:

    • Situationships, sneaky links and the blurred lines between casual dating and commitment.
    • Emotional availability and what it means to make space for another person.
    • Dating apps, social media and the illusion of endless romantic options.
    • Masculinity, femininity and authenticity within queer relationships.
    • DL culture, closeted partners and the complexities of dating at different stages of self-acceptance.
    • Protecting your peace without closing yourself off to love.
    • The difference between privacy and secrecy in relationships.
    • Heartbreak, healing and recognising your emotional needs.
    • Communication, boundaries and knowing when to walk away.
    • Building meaningful relationships while navigating financial pressures, housing and personal growth.

    Join the Conversation

Have you ever found yourself in a situationship that went on far longer than expected?

Would you date someone who wasn’t out? Can a sneaky link become a genuine friendship? And how long would you wait for someone to become emotionally available?

We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
