It sucks being a buzzkill. You never get invited anywhere and no one wants to hang out with you. But man, there were a couple things in the pop culture air this week that just really bummed us out—and on this week’s culture podcast, we need to talk about them.

For one, there was Sausage Party. The latest from Seth Rogen and friends was good for a few laughs, but was too heavy-handed and nod-nod-wink-wink with its jokes to be truly great. Then there was Netflix’s The Get Down, which has quick hits of brilliance, but often feels too, well, Baz Luhrmann-y. So yeah, it was a big week in movies and TV, but it was also one of big disappointments (and we’re still waiting for a new Frank Ocean album). Sigh.

That doesn’t mean this week’s episode of The Monitor is just three killjoys in a room being the worst, though. We’ve got some joy on deck for you as well. (Florence Foster Jenkins was great! The Night Of just keeps getting better!) So settle in and commiserate with us, won’t you? We’ve got writers and editors Peter Rubin, K.M.
