What I’m currently consuming, in threes:
Three things I’m reading:
Any vegetable recipe from Magnus Nillson- I can’t explain but something about burying vegetables in a cold Scandinavian cellar only to then carefully salt and cure the produce reminds me there are plenty of ways to convey excellence in this cooking game.
The Summer He Didn’t Die by Jim Harrison- Three short stories from one of the best writers. Jim Harrison was a deeply flawed individual who could turn you inside out whether it was his essays on food, novels, fiction, non-fiction, first person, third person, he had style and voice that could take any genre of writing. I love this group of stories because you can really witness his range without it feeling like work. Technique without making you feel like you are obligated to like it, you just do. I go back to his work often, especially when I’m engulfed in my own blunders.
Love in Color, Mythical Tales from Around the World, Retold by Bolu Babalola- She might be the best modern storyteller around. Bolu takes old world ideas, stories, myths and recharges them, and the effect is a rush of adrenaline when you read her work. She’s kinetic as hell, and btw, she also has a substack you can follow.
Three things I’m watching:
Pachinko- An Apple TV series based on the best selling book, (which I have not read). A generational story about a Korean family in Japan, covering different timelines, every frame is gorgeous, and like all immigrant stories filled with hardships, a want for belonging and some bits of happiness too, I guess.
Justified- A VERY GOOD Timothy Olyphant vehicle. Film noir themes meets Appalachia, I rewatch while I write.
The Wire- And where Justified is present, soon to follow will be an episode of, “The Wire.” Equal parts gumption and failure, I welcome both feelings at the moment.
Three Albums I’m listening to when I’m cooking currently:
I’m not giving you descriptions on music, it’s always too long for this newsletter, I advise you just play .
“Blue Kentucky Girl” by Emmylou Harris
“Pretty Girls Like Trap Music” by 2 Chainz
“The Jungle is The Only Way Out” by Mereba
Three Podcasts I’m listening to:
XOXO, Gossip Kings- Carl Tart + Lamar Woods , (two comedy writers/actors) have decided to make a rewatch podcast on Gossip Girl and I have no inclination to listen to anything else once I listen to an episode. Start with the pilot and work your way through.
Pop Culture Happy Hour- NPR vibes….LITE, quick episodes about different pieces of media.
Celebrity Book Club- Chelsea Devantez has a brilliant podcast where she reviews a celebrity memoir with a guest, I highly suggest you listen to the Tina Turner episode.
Again! I highly encourage more recommendations in the comment section, I would love to see what you guys are reading/watching/listening to, another perk of being a paid subscriber!
Coming up-
Your weekly Sicc Palette weekly podcast, now available in this feed as well as Spotify, please follow on either, or dream of dreams, both!
A longform newsletter, three weeks and counting in the making. This time it’s a roast chicken recipe meets existentialism meets flawed premises. I hope it’s done more than anyone, should be one of those ones.
