"With all the privilege I have, if I don't stand for this cause, who will?" - Abhay
In Dec 2021, I attended the wedding of my friends Abhay and Supriyo. It was a gathering of close friends and families who respected their relationship. A fun and joyous affair. A true celebration of love. A year on, the couple still could not get a joint life insurance policy like heterosexual couples, among other rights denied to them.
As per a report submitted by the Indian Government in 2012, an estimated 2.5 million people in the world’s largest democracy are from the LGBTQ+ community and do not enjoy the same legal rights as other citizens (this number would be even greater by now). Abhay and Supriyo along with another gay couple have petitioned the Supreme Court of India to modify the law in favor of same-sex marriage recognition. Now on 6 January 2023, the Supreme Court of India will start hearing the pleas seeking recognition of same-sex marriages. Keeping my fingers crossed and wish for the best outcome for us all, as human beings.
