Curry Café: Potpourri … Emergency Broadcasting and Other Musings

Listen Later

On this episode of Curry Café, the panel delves into various topics, including emergency preparedness, community radio challenges, and cultural reflections. The discussion highlights recent experiences with a tsunami warning, emphasizing the inadequacies of the local emergency communication system and the struggles faced by KCIW radio in securing an emergency broadcasting agreement with the city of Brookings. The panel critiques the city’s lack of urgency in improving communication and shares personal anecdotes from residents affected by natural disasters, including the swift spread of the Paradise Fire. Additionally, they explore cultural issues like traditional whale hunting among indigenous peoples and the historical impact of railroads. The episode concludes with a nostalgic look at classic television and an invitation for community engagement at the radio station.

Curry Café host Ray Gary led the discussion. Ray is a long-time volunteer and host of two music shows on KCIW. Ray is joined by Robin Ronay, Nicole Frenzl, and Rick McNamer. Robin is a local realtor. Nicole is well known in the music and arts community in Brookings. Rick is a volunteer on the board of KCIW.
