Hey, I’ve got a question for you. What do you and your teen talk about on a daily basis?
You probably discuss things like school or sports or homework or chores. And while those aren’t bad topics, it’s only scratching the surface! Relationships require going much deeper.
Do your conversations sound more like pointless banter than engaging dialogue? Just because you’re talking, doesn’t mean you’re relating. Try picking their brain on decisions you’re making, or getting them to solve a dilemma you’re facing. Once they start talking about your stuff, try flipping the focus back on them.
Mom, Dad, here’s my challenge. Cut the chatter. Dig a little deeper. And look for ways to really connect with the heart of your teen. And when the words finally start to flow, shut up and listen!
