Dad Ain’t No Joke

Listen Later

1. DAD IS FUN

Proverbs 3:1–4 NLT

My child,* never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. 2 If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. 3 Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. 4 Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.

“It’s ironic how over the last 30 years, the male figure has been reduced to a punchline.”

In sitcoms and commercials, fathers are often portrayed as incompetent, mindless, or unnecessary. He’s the guy who can’t fold laundry, burns the toast, and has no clue what’s going on with his own kids. But God didn’t make dads to be jokes—He made them with purpose.

2. MADE TO DISCIPLINE

Love without discipline leads to chaos.

Discipline without love leads to rebellion.

“Play is a doorway to relationship. When a dad plays, he’s saying: ‘I enjoy you.’”

— Harvard Graduate School of Education

• Playful interaction creates a foundation of trust, making correction and teaching more effective later.

FUN IS A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT

“Kids don’t remember every rule you set, but they remember how you made them feel.”

— Child Mind Institute

Proverbs 3:1

“My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands.”

“A fun dad doesn’t lose authority—he gains influence.”

3. MADE TO PROTECT

A real father will do anything to protect his children.

“A dad’s laughter creates a space where kids feel safe being themselves.”

— TIME Magazine

• Fun dads provide emotional safety, which opens kids up to honest conversations and long-term confidence.

3. MADE TO ENCOURAGE

Proverbs 3:3

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.”

4. MADE TO REFLECT

The highest calling of a father is not just to raise good kids—but to reflect the Father in Heaven.

Matthew 19:14 NLT

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”

Proverbs 3:6

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
