Poor, pitiful daddy
Here we go again! Another opportunity to feel sorry for himself, be unhappy with life in his castle, and even go so far (this time) as to "play dead".
Dad is taking stock of his life, and he does not like what he sees. He feels unnecessary or at the very least unwanted. And while I honestly can understand the point he is making, I am annoyed with the book again. Probably because of the two I have read previously that were nothing more than a continual whining throughout the book.
Like I said, this one actually does make sense. There is a reason for Dad to feel the way he does. And kudos to Dad: he actually picked up on the reality of his situation and REACTED to it. He actually FELT something. Too many dads would have no clue.
But the dad in this story (at least thinks he) DOES understand his relationship with his daughter and with his wife. He thinks he knows where he stands in this family, and he decides to play dead. At least he isn't out and out whining.
Read along with Dad's struggle and decide for yourself if you would have taken the same road he chose. I am beginning to wonder if a good counselor would be a help for Dad (/ Bevis). A LOT of people are in this situation, but they do not choose to suck their thumbs and play dead.
Sorry, but it is getting old. And, yes, I understand depression. I have had chronic depression myself. But I did something about it! Maybe you should, too. Then maybe Daddy would find a much better solution than playing dead. A solution that would get him a key role in his daughter's life instead. One that would make the reader say, "Awww," instead of "Oh, no. Not again!"
