History Inishowen is a new podcast series produced by Lands of Eogain which will explore aspects of the rich history of the most Northerly part of Ireland.

This first series focuses on the Early Christian and Medieval Period of history as it relates to the Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal, Ireland. Presented by local historian Neil McGrory, the first series features conversations with Max Adams, Colm O'Brien, Brian Lacey and Dáibhí O’Cróinín.

Local experts and those involved in community archaeology and heritage are also featured. There are conversations with John J. Hegarty from West Inishowen History and Heritage Society, Martin Hopkins from Cooley, Maura Harkin and Teish Doherty from the Colgan Heritage Committee and Sean Beattie from Culdaff and Cloncha Heritage Group.

There will also be a special episode with experts from National Monuments who will give practical advice regarding the protection of historical sites.

Episode Four features Dáibhí Ó Cróinín, an Irish historian and authority on Hiberno-Latin texts, noted for his significant mid-1980s discovery in a manuscript in Padua of the "lost" Irish 84-year Easter table. 

Ó Cróinín was Professor of History at NUI Galway and Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He specialises in the history of Ireland, Britain and Europe during the Middle Ages and Hiberno-Latin texts.

We will explore the story of St Patrick and the early expansion of Christianity in Ireland, and the debate around the dates of his arrival. We hear about the complex controversy around the calculation of the date for Easter, and the skills of the ancient Irish mathematicians and cosmologists in their observations.

We examine how Colmcille came to set up the renowned monastic complex on Iona, and the extraordinary output of writings and artistic works from this unique foundation. We probe at the connections between the sites on this peninsula and the foundation on Iona, which is located on a remote island off the coast of Scotland, but remarkably close to Inishowen.

This series coincides with the launch of the new Lands of Eogain website (www.landsofeogain.com)which gives an overview of some of the main historical sites in Inishowen.
