Careless Luxury

It is likely that James is one of the earliest written books in our New Testament cannon.  The author is likely to be the brother of Jesus himself.  One thing that has struck me, as I have been reading it, is how often you hear echoes of the words of Jesus in James' instructions.    In today’s passage James will say – ‘your wealth has rotted, moths have eaten your clothes, Your gold and silver are corroded.’

Similar to the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, when Jesus was talking about us investing in treasure that moths and rust can’t destroy.

Yet James’ letter precedes the four gospels. James, as the brother of Jesus, would of course have heard his teaching, remembered his words, and it has struck me that we are hearing many of the words of Jesus shared in this letter.
