Resurrection Bodies
Resurrection - is a but of a misunderstood word. It’s easy to think that resurrection means a person will live on in spirit, that their soul will continue on like a disembodied ghost. But that is not what resurrection means in the bible, nor is it the understanding Jews in Jesus time would have understood by the word.
The belief at the time was that at the end time, God would raise them physically, in bodily form. Tom Wright writes:
“Everybody knew about ghosts, spirits, visions, hallucinations and so on. Most people in the ancient world believed in some such things. They were quite clear that that wasn’t what they meant by ‘resurrection’... Resurrection meant bodies.” Surprised by Hope
In our story today, the disciples see the risen Jesus, and they think he is a ghost. But Jesus proves that he has flesh and bones - he has the marks in his hands and feet, he can eat fish. He is no ghost - he is physical. However, this body is also able to appear and disappear, it is eternal and incorruptible. Jesus has a resurrected, transformed physical body.
