The journey to Jerusalem was dangerous, and inevitably meant going up into the hills, as the city was built on plateau in the Judaean Mountains. The journey meant dangers, risking bandits - most often extended family groups would travel together for safety. When these psalms were written, the journey meant passing past sites of worship to other gods, the local Canaanite gods, found up in the high places, offering all sorts of temptations and deviations from the journey. But these Psalms, helped the pilgrim prepare their hearts for their encounter with God, and helped them as they faced the dangers and temptations found on the way. They are written for pilgrims – those who have set their hearts and their minds on a journey of faith.
