When God calls Jeremiah into service as a prophet, Jeremiah is not enthusiastic. He tells God that he can't do what God asks because he is too [fill in the blank]. For Jeremiah, he claims he is too young. How might we fill in that blank? Too busy? Too scared? Too unqualified? God not only addresses Jeremiah's lack of qualifications, God also addresses the underlying fear. Like Jeremiah, we do not need to be afraid because God's calling to service comes with the promise that God will be with us.

For Reflection:
Jeremiah does not feel qualified because of his youth, though God's answer implies that Jeremiah's real concern might be his fear of the people.
- "God, I can't do it because I am too [fill in the blank]." If God were to call you to greater service, how might you fill in the blank?
- Is there a deeper fear hiding underneath our reluctance to step up? Apparently, Jeremiah was (quite reasonably) afraid of being rejected by the people. What fears might be hiding behind your reluctance in such a situation?
