Today's passage continues the interaction between John the Baptist and Jesus. John uses two images that both point to something that we need but cannot provide for ourselves. First, as the sacrificial Lamb of God, Jesus will fully remedy our brokenness and sin. Second, Jesus offers us a baptism, a cleansing rebirth, that is not only of water, but of the Holy Spirit of God. Both images point to a redeemed life that only Jesus can offer to us!

For Reflection:
John continues to testify about the greatness of Jesus, that Jesus will do what must be done and what we cannot do.
- John calls Jesus "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (v29). What do you understand John to be saying? Are there ways that we are tempted to forget that only Jesus can truly remedy our sin?
- In another reference to what only Jesus can do, John says in v33 that he baptizes with water but Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit. What do you understand John to mean? How have you experienced this baptism?
