Jesus has already said that he is the "resurrection and the life" (John 11:26). Here he claims also to be "the way" -- the only way to the Father. But what does it mean that he is "the truth"? A listener today might also find Jesus' claim to be the only way to be offensive and close-minded. Is Jesus' declaration meant to be divisive, or invitational?

For Reflection:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life." Even Jesus' closest disciples had difficulty with what Jesus said.
- Suppose a child asked you what this statement meant, perhaps in Sunday school. How might you answer?
- Even if Jesus intended to be invitational, Christians have often not been good bearers of this message. What are some ways that we might follow what Jesus did (e.g. humbly washing feet, forgiving enemies, laying down his life, etc.) that might help people more receptive to Jesus' claim to be "the way"?
