Daily Devotions 57 - Choose Life: Blessings, Curses, and the Rich Fool

Listen Later

Episode Overview

In this longer “mega reading” episode, Pastor George walks through Deuteronomy 27–31 and Luke 12. He encourages listeners to slow down and invest quality time in God’s Word, even when the chapters are lengthy, because deepening our relationship with Christ must come first—before family, church, or anything else.

Key Highlights from Deuteronomy 27–31 (The End of the Pentateuch)

  • Deuteronomy 27: Moses commands large stones to be set up and inscribed with the Ten Commandments (along with the first five books of the Bible preserved alongside the Ark of the Covenant). He then pronounces a series of curses from Mount Ebal—essentially a recap of the law from Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, showing the consequences of breaking God’s commands.
  • Deuteronomy 28: The famous chapter of blessings and curses—a classic suzerain-vassal treaty structure between God and Israel. Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings curse.
  • Deuteronomy 29: A public renewal and recommitment to the covenant before entering the Promised Land (like a big “altar call” moment).
  • Deuteronomy 30: God sets before the people a clear choice: life or death, blessing or curse. Returning to the Lord brings restoration and blessing. Verse 11 onward powerfully presents the decision we all face—choose closeness to God and life, or turn away and face the consequences.
  • Deuteronomy 31: Joshua is inaugurated as the new leader. Every seven years, the entire law (the five books of Moses) was to be read aloud to all the people so they would never forget. The chapter ends with a cliffhanger: a song from Moses is coming next.

Pastor George notes that, as of late March, the church’s daily reading plan has now completed the entire Pentateuch (Genesis–Deuteronomy).

Key Highlights from Luke 12

This is one of Pastor George’s favorite chapters. Jesus teaches strongly against hypocrisy from several angles:

  • Claiming to fear God while actually fearing people.
  • Saying you love Jesus but refusing to confess Him publicly.
  • The Parable of the Rich Fool — a man who plans to build bigger barns, relax, and enjoy his wealth, only to die that very night. It’s a powerful warning (especially relevant to modern American life) against laying up treasures only on earth instead of in heaven. Diversify your investments—live for both this world and the next, with heaven as the priority.
  • Don’t worry about material things; seek God’s kingdom first.
  • The difference between the faithful servant (heavenly-minded) and the evil servant (earthly-minded).
  • Jesus brings division when truth is preached—hypocrites separate from the faithful.
  • Discern the times (hypocrites can read the weather but miss the obvious spiritual reality right in front of them).
  • Make peace with your adversary quickly—there is never an excuse not to love and pray for others, even if they’re difficult.

Main Application & Closing Prayer

The core message of the day: Don’t be a hypocrite—don’t split your loyalty, priorities, worship, or attention between earth and heaven. Choose life over the curse of death. Run toward Jesus instead of the world’s empty promises (which may look joyful but ultimately lead to death). Live heavenly-minded, love your brothers and sisters in Christ, and keep your focus on eternal treasures.

Pastor George closes with a heartfelt prayer asking God to help us avoid hypocrisy, choose life, stay focused on Christ, and love others as He commands—especially in the lead-up to Easter, remembering the unconditional new covenant we have through Jesus’ finished work on the cross.

Bottom Line

Day 57 is a powerful reminder to choose life by staying faithful to God’s Word a
