Former US House Speaker Tip O'Neill said, "All politics are local." It doesn't get more "local" than the race for Maricopa County Treasurer. And it doesn't have a more qualified and experienced candidate than Dan Toporek, Democrat. In Dan's 34 years in the military, responsible for millions in Pentagon programs, he learned to be a "good steward of the people's money."
Dan shows real foresight in realizing the office and the county faces tremendous challenges in the loss of sales tax from the state and reduced returns on county investments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting downturn in the economy.
Perhaps, no other local office has a more direct impact on the pocketbook issues of citizens because it collects property taxes, sales tax, business fees and motor vehicle fees. We all need to pay more attention to these down ballot, local elections.
