Catu Diosis knows how to throw a party! And you’re invited to the next one. 

Catu Diosis is a DJ, producer and member of the Ugandan-based Nyege Nyege collective. Nyege Nyege are THE collective to know about, they have been redefining African electronic music since 2015 and continue to push it year on year. Catu is currently based between Germany and Uganda and weaves her knowledge of music with dance and performance to create the most memorable DJ sets for her fans around the world.

In this episode Catu Diosis talks to Emily about how she learned how to DJ, getting stranded in Germany during the pandemic, her tour of Brazil and attending the famous Brazilian carnival for the first time.

How a car accident completely changed L-Vis 1990’s next steps…

L-Vis1990 is a producer, DJ and record label owner of the iconic label Night Slugs. Being at the forefront of UK club culture for years is no easy feat, but L-Vis 1990 has most definitely been a leader in UK Dance music. As the co-founder of Night Slugs alongside Bok Bok and through his alter ego Dance System, L-Vis 1990 has forged a career that’s seen him play alongside some of the greatest electronic DJs of our generation but there was a cost. In this episode L-Vis 1990 talks to Emily about the dark side of club culture and how it took a toll on his mental health, DJing for Fatboy Slim and how he is supporting smaller venues around the UK.

Academia meets lived experience of the culture, that’s what Suzi Analogue brings! Suzi Analogue is an artist, DJ, label owner of Never Normal Records and associate professor who has lectured on Mapping Black Music Ecologies at Harvard University. Born in Baltimore she's lived all over the world and brings a macro view of music which is very different to what we've heard on the podcast so far.

Suzi Analogue talks to Emily about how a conversation with Crystal Waters changed her life, how attending the legendary Low End Theory nights in LA shaped her sound, the roots of B'more club music (known as Baltimore Club outside the city), deconstructs the power structures in the music industry and talks about her work celebrating the women written out of dance music history.

It's our first live episode! This episode comes to you from Gilles Peterson's, We Out Here festival in the UK, where Emily caught up with DJ Yasmin.

Yasmin is a DJ, singer/songwriter and the co-founder of Trippin, an online travel guide powered by a global community. Yasmin has worked with everyone from Major Lazer to Gordon City and Pharrell. 

In this episode Yasmin talks to Emily about the reality of being “a product” of major labels, why she swapped London for Mexico City and the importance of having more women in the music industry at all levels. There were also some great questions from our live audience.

G33 is a DJ, producer and member of the collective Girls Don’t Sync. As a DJ, she is redefining what the UK club scene looks and sounds like and making a scene that is inclusive.

DJ Target's name will be familiar to anyone with even a passing interest in UK black music. He is a broadcaster, author and producer. As a key figure of the UK grime scene, he began his career as an original member of Pay As U Go Cartel as well as being a founding member of Roll Deep. He has played a fundamental role in creating grime, which he documents in his book Grime Kids. Grime Kids was adapted for TV and Target is also the host of The Rap Game alongside Krept and Konan and Tonight With Target. DJ Target has hosted a radio show on BBC Radio 1Xtra since 2006 where he has been instrumental in championing new and underground talent. He was also on BBC Radio 1 from 2013 to 2022.

In this episode DJ Target talks to Emily about the regret of selling his prized possessions to none other than Dizzee Rascal, the impact of the legendary London dubplate studio, Music House, which was foundational for black music scenes in London from reggae to jungle to garage, and what it was like DJing in Ibiza for the first time. He also talks about breaking new artists on his radio show and which tunes he would choose for carnival. This one is essential listening!

She began her career at Australia’s leading youth radio station, triple j, where she championed underground dance music for nearly a decade. In 2015, Nina launched her own label, NLV Records, continuing her mission to spotlight underground sounds and shape the future of club music.

In this episode Nina Las Vegas talks to Emily about working with a Spice Girl, how she balances corporate DJ work so she can really get creative and empowering women in the music industry.
