A recent study  found that 85 percent of black teens own or have access to a smartphone. Among Hispanics and whites in the same study, 71 percent own or have access to a smartphone.  The Pew study also indicates that African American teens dominate messaging apps such as Kik and Snapchat. 46% of Hispanic teens and 47% of African-American teens use messaging apps to send texts, compared with one-quarter (24%) of white teens with cell phones.

Due to the increase access to smartphones and the use of messaging apps, African American parents are becoming concerned about cyber traps.  A recent study from Northwestern indicates that internet safety is one of the top concerns among African American parents.
