Re: Dangerous Gambles:
I'm an aficionado of disco, soul, and funk, and not drawn to rock except pop. Nor do I read much of this genre of fisction. I have to say however that this
book was a good read and quite entertaining. It's apparently book one of seven, and I found it to be most
imaginative when the author delved into his realm of WWIII alternate universe espionage. The band's
dialogue is very realistic of course which profanities abounding. That said,
there's not gratuitous rock and roll misbehavior, etc., so itâs unlikely to offend, which is a feat as anyone who lived through the 70s can attest. I look forward to the rest of the series. Thereâs enough suspense to keep you reading to the end. The teaser page for Renegade, the second book, incites curiosity.
A Great Idea that Works Really Well
The idea of a rock band getting involved in covert government operations is one that works really well in this novel. The fact that it's set in the 1970s is not something that appeals to me since I'm not a big fan of that decade's music or fashion, but it also didn't get in the way of me thoroughly enjoying the book. In fact, I have to say it's fantastic. The storyline moves along at just the right pace and with just the right amount of suspense to keep you turning the pages. The backdrop of a Soviet-American conflict, something that's unthinkable to most of us today, is handled with surprising realism. A dear friend of mine loaned me this book, so now I'm going to have to find out if I can borrow the sequel as well -- I'm invested in what happens to these characters next!

"Dangerous Gambles" is an exciting story that immediately drew me in to a familiar time and place (the 1970s local rock 'n' roll scene), but with a plausible political twist on how the world might have, or could have, been. I enjoyed the well-defined Roadhouse Sons characters, and found myself caring about them and their plights, almost as if I was on tour with them. I was so invested in the outcome that I rushed out to purchase the sequel, "Renegade," to find out if all is as it seems to be....which, I hope, it isn't (still reading "Renegade"!). This story kept me involved, guessing, and thoroughly enjoying a return to a nostalgic past in which music can conquer all! ~ Cynthia Rodier
