South Korean films are known for their length. THE CALL (2020) is one that falls just below the two hour mark. The film is a remake of the English language film THE CALLER (2011) that received mixed reviews. The remake however based off the limited reviews on Rottentomatoes gives it 100% out of 12 reviews.
When 28-year-old Seo-yeon Kim heads out to the countryside to visit her ill and estranged mother, she unfortunately loses her cellphone. At the homestead, she finds an old cordless phone. When a anguished woman calls and says she’s held prisoner by her own mother, Seo-yeon begins to find out secrets in her mother’s house as well as secrets from her own family’s past.
The film is written and directed by Chung-hyun Lee, based off the original script from the 2011 film written by Sergio Casci. The film stars actresses Shin-hye Park, Jong-seo Jeon, and Sung-ryung Kim. With its interesting plot using a feature seen in other films, the story has enough originality to make it stand out.
