Dark Night Waits; Glory Breaks

December 7, 2025 – Dark Night Waits; Glory Breaks – Isaiah 9:6-7
Carols: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear/O Little Town of Bethlehem

Isaiah 9:6-7 is a prophecy about the coming of a king who will bring an everlasting reign of peace and justice, and it is understood in Christianity as a prophecy about Jesus Christ. The passage identifies the coming child with divine titles such as “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace” and states that the government and an unending peace will be on his shoulders.

Meaning of the prophecy

  • A future king: The prophecy speaks of a child being born and a son being given, signifying a ruler who will bring an end to the fear and instability of the time, such as that experienced by King Ahaz.
  • Divine nature: The titles given to the child—”Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father”—are seen as clearly indicating a divine being, and not just a mortal king.
  • Eternal reign: The prophecy promises that his government will be characterized by peace and justice that will have no end, and it will be established forever.
  • Jesus as the fulfillment: In the Christian view, this prophecy is fulfilled in the birth, life, and future reign of Jesus Christ, who is seen as both a human descendant of David and the divine Son of God.
  • Key titles and their significance

    • Wonderful Counselor: This title suggests the Messiah will be a source of wisdom and guidance from God’s perspective.
    • Mighty God: This title points to the divine nature of the Messiah, indicating he is all-powerful.
    • Everlasting Father: This name signifies that Jesus will be a protector and provider for his people for all eternity, like a father to his family.
    • Prince of Peace: This title promises a reign characterized by grace, comfort, forgiveness, and a lasting peace that surpasses human understanding.

Isaiah 9:6-7 – New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

6 For a child has been born for us,
          a son given to us;
      authority rests upon his shoulders,
          and he is named
      Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
          Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Great will be his authority,[a]
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
      with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
