An Excellent British Police Procedual
Darkness Visible
Chievers, a man who loves the dark and lives in it more happily than any light, sells several types of drugs to anyone who has the money to buy. Because the British police are onto his ways and, in fact, closing in on him, he turns to another source of funding. The business of bribery requires more stealth but at least he is not exposed. Heâs pleased with this because he can tap his victims when he needs money, never keeping his promise that âthis will be the last time.â Each of his victims believes this but pay him when he âhitsâ them up again. Only, this time he taps some who do not have the money he demands and they realize that he is a menace.
Each of his victims has something in their past or current living condition to hide: one a history of prostitution, and other an affair, a third a clouded military history, etc. He realizes that he must have some protection because he is vulnerable. Purchasing an air gun seems to be a good choice.
Lambert and DS Hook are involved. Lambert has made his way to the top and finds he has need to be involved. This police procedural ensues and is painstakingly presented. Every detail is explored and discussed. Each time the inspectors regroup they go to each of the victims of black mail and go over new evidence with them. Although tedious, it is excellent police work.
I enjoyed this book.
