In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, director Darren Aronofsky dove into his unmade Batman Year One adaptation. Years ago, before Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Aronofsky co-wrote a script with comics legend Frank Miller, providing a new spin on the mythos in which Bruce Wayne rejects his family fortune and grows up on the streets of Gotham. A similar idea has recently made it to DC Comics in the popular series Absolute Batman.

Aronofsky’s unmade Batman Year One would’ve starred Joaquin Phoenix and predated Joker by 20 years in taking inspiration from Taxi Driver and going for a gritty, realistic R-rating.
