Database Basics for Financial Professionals - Part 2

Listen Later

Today’s world runs on databases and is an integral component of every application, platform, and service. There isn’t a single business technology that is not utilizing a database in a meaningful way. Reporting tools like Power BI depend on a database to create beautiful and insightful dashboards. Our accounting systems such as Quickbooks or Xero use a database to store information about our financial records. Our customer tools such as Salesforce or Hubspot use a database to store information about our sales efforts. There are even new features and functions of Excel which depend on utilizing a database.

As widespread and important as this technology is most financial professionals lack a basic understanding of how databases operate. Traditionally, working with databases has been “out of scope” of the accounting team and relegated to an organization’s IT department. However, in today’s technology environment, accountants must have at least a basic understanding of how databases operate and the ability to query data on their own. This will empower them to write their reports, design their dashboards and work with Cloud data more effectively. This course will go through databases basics, focusing on the knowledge that would be most helpful for a financial professional. The goal is to give the professional enough hands-on knowledge to be able to query data from a database or cloud provider to create their reports in Excel or Power BI.
