Dave Macpherson: 20 per cent suicide reduction target not okay

Listen Later

Mixed reviews over recommendations turned out by the government's mental health and addition inquiry.
All 40 recommendations are now with the Health Minister after the 200 page report was made public yesterday.
Dave Macpherson lost his son in 2015 and told Mike Hosking it's underwhelming.
"To be frank, I was more optimistic before I saw the report than after. It's very same old, same old. It's a little short on a lot of concrete actions."
One of the recommendations includes a 20 percent reduction target in suicide rates by 2030.
Macpherson says the Prime Minister promised a zero suicide target and she hasn't delivered.
"Over 12 years, only reducing by 120 and we're still going to have 430 suicides and that's going to be ok? I don't think so.
"That's one of the most underwhelming things of the whole report."
He says the establishment of a mental health commission would be a good move.
Macpherson does not think alcohol is as responsible for our mental health issues as the report suggested.
