North Korea: Missile programme funded through stolen crypto, UN report says

North Korean cyber-attacks have stolen millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency to fund the country's missile programmes, a UN report briefed to media says.

Between 2020 and mid-2021 cyber-attackers stole more than $50m (£37m) of digital assets, investigators found.

Such attacks are an "important revenue source" for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, they said.

A Facebook spokesperson, however, pointed to tweets by Stephane Kasriel, head of Meta's cryptocurrency wallet Novi, that said the decision to sell was not made by Meta, but by the Diem Association.

"We hope that the Association’s sale of their assets to @silvergatebank will allow the project’s vision to live on. Because we still believe in the shared financial inclusion mission," Kasriel wrote.

In a recent interview, Mashinsky said that Bitcoin could follow past precedents and surge by around four times over current levels, after testing the critical support level.

The IMF warns El Salvador to drop Bitcoin as a legal currency

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged El Salvador to drop Bitcoin as legal tender and better regulate the digital wallet the government created and promoted to its citizens.

The South American country became the first in the world to adopt the cryptocurrency as legal tender in September last year.

However, the IMF has urged “the authorities to narrow the scope of the Bitcoin law by removing Bitcoin's legal tender status," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The adoption of a cryptocurrency as legal tender, however, entails large risks for financial and market integrity, financial stability and consumer protection," It added.

What happened: Mark Webber and his team of quantum scientists have been investigating Bitcoin’s SHA-256 coding algorithm that was first used in the early 2000s by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

According to the scientists, the world's most powerful quantum computer, IBM’s supercomputer with 127 qubits, is currently far from cracking the SHA-256 algorithm. Their calculations show that a 317 million qubit computer would need at least one hour to break Bitcoin’s encryption, but to execute a 10-minute hack, a 1.9 billion qubit quantum computer would be required.
