David Copperfield has always been among Dickens’s most popular novels and was his own “favorite child.” The work is semiautobiographical, and, although the title character differs from his creator in many ways, David Copperfield is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist.  This edition uses the text of the first volume publication of 1850, and includes updated suggestions for further reading, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him—his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and (more cursorily) his emergence from parliamentary reporting into successful novel writing.
