TODAY: David Mirkin, American feature film and television writer and director. Originally beginning as an electrical engineer, Mirkin quickly realized that this career path wasn't for him and began his career as a writer, with early credits on Three's Company and The Larry Sanders Show. He is best known for his tenure as the showrunner for The Simpsons, starting in season 5, and is credited with introducing more surreal elements and ideas for the show, such as the famous episode Deep Space Homer. During his time with the show he would win 4 Emmy awards and a Peabody award before leaving the position after season 6. Since then, he has had a recurring presence on the show, and has gone on to write and direct feature films such as Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and Heartbreakers.
