He blends personal experience and a flair for the unconventional to create powerful stabs of reality, hilarity, and beauty through his fictional work.

In this excerpt, he addresses the curious title of his book, You Are Make Very Important Bathtime:

I think initially it was really just a play on the type of grammar that comes out of natural speech from someone who is not a native English speaker. The premise of the book is that it’s an ESL teacher living in Japan, teaching non-native English speakers. Also kind of inspired by George Bush’s Bush-isms, which I was there for live and I just found it endlessly fascinating – that he was one of the more tremendous inadvertent poets…and he didn’t even know it. It comes out of that [experience of] finding poetry where it wasn’t meant to be…
