Day 11 – Christmas Greenery: Holly, Ivy, and Mistletoe

Welcome to Day 11 of the Lifespring! WhyChristmas Advent Calendar. Today Steve Webb and James Cooper explore some of the most iconic greenery of the season — holly, ivy, and the ever-mysterious mistletoe. These plants show up everywhere during Christmas, but their story stretches back long before evergreen wreaths and modern decorations.

James begins by explaining how these plants were used in ancient winter festivals, long before Christianity arrived in Europe. As the gospel spread, believers gave new meaning to these symbols. Holly’s sharp leaves became a picture of the crown of thorns, its red berries a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice. Ivy pointed toward our dependence on God, clinging to Him for strength and support. Even mistletoe, with its unusual growth and long-standing folklore, found a place in Christmas tradition — including the custom of kissing beneath its branches.

We also learn how these decorations were traditionally displayed through the season, why Twelfth Night and Candlemas mattered, and how folklore, culture, and faith overlapped to shape the greenery we still use today. For more Christmas plant traditions and history, visit WhyChristmas.com.

Enjoy this fun and insightful look at the meaning behind the decorations hanging in your home this season!
