Israel turned from God again, and He gave them over to the Philistines for forty years. An angel of the Lord appeared to a woman who was barren and had no children. He told her she would give birth to a son who would save Israel from the Philistines. The woman bore a son whose name was Samson. When Samson grew to be a young man, he married a Philistine woman. Samson challenged the Philistines to solve a riddle. They were unable to solve the riddle, but they convinced Samson’s wife to trick him into giving her the answer to the riddle. She told the Philistines the riddle, and Samson left her. She was given to Samson’s companion, who had been his best man.
