The Lord spoke to Samuel in a vision. Samuel went to Eli three times believing it was him who called. Eli told Samuel to return and respond to the call of the Lord. God told Samuel He would soon punish the house of Eli because his sons blasphemed against God and Eli did not confront his sons. Samuel was recognized as a prophet because of his visions. The Philistines defeated Israel and captured the ark. Four thousand Israelites died in the first battle and thirty thousand died in the second battle, including the two sons of Eli. When the news reached Eli, he fell back, his neck was broken, and he died. Eli’s daughter-in-law gave birth to a son and named him Ichabod saying, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”
