The Philistines set the ark of God in a temple beside their idol. The idol fell face down multiple times, losing its head and hands the second time. The Philistines experienced sickness, tumors, and death while they possessed the ark. The Philistines returned the ark to Israel with a guilt offering. God’s people offered burnt offerings in celebration. God struck seventy men because they disrespected the ark by looking in it. Israel did not honor God or the ark for a long period of time. Israel eventually mourned over their sinful ways. Samuel challenged Israel to do away with their foreign gods and turn to the Lord. They fasted and confessed their sin. Israel defeated the Philistines. Samuel judged Israel the remaining years of his life.
