Jacob becomes ill, and Joseph brings his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to him. Jacob blesses them, placing his right hand on the younger, Ephraim, and gives them an inheritance among his own sons.

Jacob then gathers all his sons and speaks over each one, recounting their actions and future paths. He gives instructions for his burial in Canaan and later dies.

Joseph mourns his father, and Jacob is buried in the family burial place alongside Abraham and Isaac. After Jacob’s death, Joseph’s brothers fear retaliation, but they approach him together. Joseph speaks with them, and they continue living in Egypt.

Joseph lives to an old age, sees several generations of his family, and gives instructions that his bones be carried out of Egypt when the time comes. Joseph then dies, bringing the book of Genesis to a close.
