The enemies of Israel attempted to gain support against them from other tribes. Nehemiah prayed for protection. He established guards for the people. They worked under the protection of one another and were all armed with spears. Nehemiah called against the nobles who were taking advantage of the returned exiles. The nobles promised to return the people’s land to them without any charge. Nehemiah was gracious to the poor. Their enemies accused them of planning a rebellion, but Nehemiah did not allow the claims to hinder the building of the wall. The wall was finished in fifty-two days, and their enemies were afraid.
