Yesterday as we studied joy we concluded that “Joy is not the absence of difficulty but the presence of God.” A similar truth is found in the Gift of Peace.
Peace is an unlikely state of being in a world that is so full of conflict, evil, and circumstances that bring anything but peace. It is the upper room discourse in the Gospel of John where we find the best teaching on peace.
Start with this truth. Peace is not the absence of trouble. In fact, Jesus told His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).
Further in John 14:27, Jesus makes it clear that He is the giver of peace and it is a supernatural peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Our peace is grounded in the power and goodness of God and it can prevent our hearts from being troubled and our hearts fearful. The peace of our world is an absence of trouble. The peace of God is peace in the midst of trouble.
Twice in John 20, Jesus says to the disciples who were living in fear, “Peace be with you.” Think about your circumstances today. The uncertainties you face, the unknowns you have in your life and then hear the whisper of God to you, “Peace be with you.” As Paul says in Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Again notice the connection between our trust in God and His peace in our lives. Trust and peace, like trust and joy go hand in hand. The more we press into Him, the more peace and joy we experience.
If you lack peace today, there is an answer. Spend more time with the giver of peace. It is amazing how time in His presence changes our perspective because we start to take on His perspective which is one of peace and joy.
Peace is a gift from God. It is not dependent on events or circumstances of life. In fact, it is the antidote to the circumstances of life which are anything but peaceful.
Father, thank you for the gift of peace. May you fill my heart with your peace today. Allow me to walk through troubled times with the supernatural gift of your peace. Amen.
