Today we commemorate the Holy Innocents, the children of Bethlehem who were killed by King Herod in his attempt to destroy the newborn King. Honored by the Church as the first martyrs of the New Covenant, the Holy Innocents remind us that Christ’s coming into the world immediately confronted darkness and revealed the priceless dignity of every human life.

Holy Innocents,

children of Bethlehem and first witnesses to Christ,

pray for us.

Intercede for all children, for the unborn,

and for those who suffer violence and injustice.

Teach us to protect life, to trust in God’s justice,

and to never forget that every life is precious.
