Waking up on a holiday with a giant task to accomplish is kind of stressful and kind of wonderful. On a day when we would normally do ‘nothing’, we were awake with creativity. We brainstormed song ideals as we ate cinnamon rolls in the morning. We showed up at a relative’s house, saw their gorgeous baby grand piano and played something simple inspired by Carol of the Bells. As each family member arrived at the party we grabbed them (they were still wearing coats and purses) and shoved a microphone into their hands and slid headphones over their ears. We told them to sing “Merry Christmas” over and over. Whatever they did would be perfect. The whole music project took 30 minutes. We called it good, closed the computer and went to drink wine. My favorite thing about this song is how it captures the different personalities and levels of enthusiasm that you’ll find at most family gatherings.
