Saints in a Year

Day 98: St. Paul Miki & Companions

Listen Later

Today the Church honors St. Paul Miki and the Twenty Six Martyrs of Japan. Paul Miki was a Japanese Jesuit priest formed in the samurai class, trained in honor, courage, and loyalty. When he gave his life for Christ, those virtues were transformed into fearless witness and forgiveness.

In this episode of Saints in a Year, Saul reflects on the lives of the Japanese martyrs. You will learn how the Gospel took root in Japanese culture, why Paul Miki preached forgiveness from the cross, how faith strengthened believers under persecution, and why Christ perfects what is truly human.

đź“– Scripture

Matthew 5:10

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

đź’¬ Thought to Remember

“I forgive the emperor and all who have sought my death. I beg them to seek baptism and be Christians.”

Reflection:

St. Paul Miki shows us that Christ does not erase identity. He fulfills it. Courage, honor, and loyalty reach their highest meaning when offered to God.

🙏 Prayer

St. Paul Miki and companions, pray for us. Strengthen our faith, teach us mercy with courage, and help us remain faithful to Christ. Amen.
