The Day of the Dead celebration is a cultural pillar of Mexico’s rituals of memory, conviviality and spirituality, this episode celebrates the history behind this vibrant tradition that is one of Mexico’s most joyous cultural export.
It also offers an introduction to the Mayan ceremonies for the dead and I read a short story from Mexican anthropologist and archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma called “Yaotl in the land of the dead.

This episode features a conversation with Dr Caroline Dodds Pennock about her latest book: On Savage Shores: How Indigenous Americans Discovered Europe combining a critical perspective that questions the historiography, narratives, and consequences of marginalizing the role of indigenous people in the colonial and post-colonial contexts, with a critical view of the complex history of Mexico's formation and the silenced voices and stories that continue to bleed through the cracks of power structures. 


We talk about the challenges of writing historical narratives about indigenous travelers, the types of historical research will we be looking at in the future, and what are the obstacles that decolonial historical research has to tackle to diversify and enrich present and future scholarship.

Episode 82

Dr Pablo Sierra’s research contests that blackness is a decidedly foreign concept in the cultural history of the City of Puebla, an idealised urban centre whose narratives about Spanish baroque splendour have silenced the stories and presence of other ethnic groups, namely thousands of enslaved and free afro descendants.
In this episode, we discuss the rise of Afromexican studies, Puebla’s role in the slave trade, the racialised configuration of the novohispanic society, and the challenges of critical historical research.
We also talk about the case of an elite Afro-Indigenous couple in colonial Puebla, called Felipe Monsón y Mojica and Juana María de la Cruz that lived in the 17th century and rose to power and wealth as chilli tycoons. Their history reveals incredible details about social mobility, self-empowerment, interracial relations and even Puebla’s intertwined history with piracy in the Caribbean.
