The First was originally created on March 23rd, 2021
The first Give 'Em The Boot compilation (Hellcat Records - 1997) was a big deal for me. Exposed me to lots of punk music and bands that I would follow for years, but what had a bigger impact on me was the ska I discovered on that album. The Skatalites, Hepcat, The Slackers... All huge bands that had a major influence on my life.
Amongst those greats, and what stuck with me most at age 10 or 12, was the last song on the album, "Playtime" by Dave Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7.
It made appreciate and respect instrumental songs, it made me want to explore jazz in a new weird-ass way, and it made me want to be a musician more than any punk song I'd ever heard.
So turn it up and dance like a kid! And cheers to the Rude Boys, Skinheads, Punks, and the ones still searching for that song!
