Dungeons and Dragons had their origins in wargaming.  It was a supplement to the chain mail rules and not a stand-alone game so it makes sense to include some rules for mass combat.  Back in the day, we had “The Battle System”, a D&D supplement that gave us rules for mass combat.  Today, we have Unearthed Arcana’s version of that system.
