Where's My Sock?

De-esser

Listen Later

A de-esser is an audio tool that reduces harsh “S” and “SH” sounds (sibilance) when they get too sharp. In this episode, Mr. E explains de-esser in beginner-friendly language and why it matters for post-production choices: if you try to fix sibilance by cutting all the high frequencies with EQ, you can make the whole voice dull. You’ll learn what a de-esser is designed to do—tame the spikes—plus what it sounds like when it’s pushed too far.
