Dead Dog Thinking

II Samuel 9:1-13 tells of a time when King David showed grace to one of King Saul’s descendants, a man named Mephibosheth. Grace can be said to be undeserved divine love or getting something good that you do not believe you deserve. Mephibosheth was the disabled son of Jonathan who was Saul’s son. Mephibosheth came from a disgraced family, he was poor, doomed because of Saul’s sin, and considered himself to be a “dead dog.” But David wanted to show kindness to Jonathan’s son since Jonathan had defended David when Saul wanted to kill him. Mephibosheth did not consider himself to be worthy and feared that David wanted to punish him for being related to Saul. Imagine his relief when he found out that David wanted to bestow blessings upon him. David gave him land that Saul had owned and gave him a permanent place at the King’s table. Yes, this is an old, old story. But, today, you have also been forgiven and offered a permanent place at the table that Jesus has prepared for you. You may feel unworthy and think that your sins cannot be forgiven. As sinners we are often afraid to face God with our sins. But God is calling you in spite of your sin. Jesus, who paid the price for your sin, invites us to His table as one of God’s own adopted family. Will you accept His invitation?
