Dead Works

Opportunities to repent of dead works and replace them with living works.

What are dead works?

Definition

From our Foundation Couse for Kids by Teacher Chantal Pelser:

“So we first have to humble ourselves and give over to Jesus confessing that without Jesus, we are not good in ourselves. That is called repentance. When we repent it when we stop and make a bout turn and go the opposite way. In the Bible the word repentance links up with the process a butterfly goes through from egg to adult. The process is called Metamorphosis. That is what happens to our lives when we give up trying to be a beautiful butterfly and let Jesus change us!”

From our Grown up Foundation Course:

“Repent from dead works

We need to repent from self-effort and works.

Stop trying to please God by seeking His favour through good works and self-effort.

Genesis 4:4-6

Cain tried to earn God’s favour through his own efforts.

Samuel 15:22-24

Saul tried to earn God’s favour through his own efforts.  We must repent from things not done. “Dead Works” are all human efforts to atone for our sins.”

Here are some opportunities for us to repent of dead works:

Here’s a warm up list:
  1. New year’s resolutions…
  2. Diets…
  3. Unrealistic fitness plans…
  4. Getting into old clothes!
  5. Trusting in Banks and uncertain riches…
  6. Hanging out with bad friends…
  7. Feeling guilty about your old church…
  8. Judging others while forgetting your own log in the eye!
  9.

From the Bible here are some opportunities men had to change.

Some used it and others didn’t and the results were significant and affected future generations…

Those guys who vowed not to eat until they killed Paul – I think they eventually had to break their vows! Act 23:12  And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

That Sorcerer, called Simon who wanted to buy the power to lay hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit! Act 8:18  And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

Act 8:19  saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

Act 8:20  But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!

King Saul who wanted to please people and not fulfil God’s plan. He ended up losing the ability to hear God for himself and went to witch to get guidance calling up spirits to get direction.

He lost his kingdom to a worshipping shepherd boy called David.

1Sa 15:18  Now the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’

1Sa 15:19  Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the LORD?”

1Sa 15:20  And Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

1Sa 15:21  But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.”

1Sa 15:22  So Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and s
