Deadly Road Rage Incident Leaves 11-Year-Old Boy Dead; Suspect Facing Open Murder Charges

Listen Later

Henderson Police responded to a fatal alleged road rage shooting just after 7:30 a.m. Friday on the 215 Beltway near Gibson Road. The incident began as two vehicles were jockeying for position in congested freeway traffic, eventually leading both drivers to roll down their windows and argue. According to Henderson Police, Tyler Matthew Johns, age 22, allegedly fired a single shot from his handgun into a hybrid SUV, striking an 11-year-old boy, Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria, who was sitting in the back seat on his way to school. The child was transported to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, which the Clark County Coroner has stated were caused by a gunshot wound to the head. After the shot was fired, the SUV’s driver, identified as the child's stepfather Valente Ayala, rammed the suspect’s vehicle, bringing both vehicles to a stop in the middle of the freeway. Both men exited their vehicles and began a heated exchange, during which two witnesses intervened.

A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer happened upon the altercation and detained Johns, who, according to arrest records cited by ABC News, admitted to discharging his firearm but claimed he did not know there was a child in the vehicle. The case has been designated as open murder, and Johns was booked for both open murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He is being held without bail pending his preliminary court hearing scheduled for December 4. The status of the investigation is ongoing and described as under investigation by law enforcement, with officials emphasizing the gravity of the incident and the need for thorough review. No further suspects are being sought in connection with this case at this time.
