KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Losing my hearing at the age of four affects the way I think about the hearing community, I was angry at them because I was bullied at a young age, and I thought that the older I got the more I would be bullied. On top of that, I developed anxiety. It was very hard to communicate with teachers, even, who had never taught a deaf child before. I really had to pull up my socks and rely on my family’s support to boost my confidence.
  • I’m a lip-reader, I have to read your lips to figure out what you’re saying. Covid made me more anxious to be around people because they were so nervous to take off their masks to talk. My boss introduced me to clear masks, which I didn’t know existed until then, so that made things a little easier for me.
  • The amount I can hear changes day-to-day depending on the weather or how tired I am. Signing and lipreading is tiring, so if you’re tired and you don’t have the energy it can be really hard. The hearing community should be mindful of that, we are really trying to hear you, so don’t make it harder than it should be.

BEST MOMENTS

‘As I got older I found the right people to talk to, and found clips of YouTube to help me. Support is so important, without support we don’t get anywhere.’
‘I want to start my own coaching business to help people who have disabilities to overcome anxiety and self-esteem issues.’
‘Be consistent when you’re being inclusive, you don’t know who’s going to walk in the door and need your service, or who might be watching your social media platforms.’

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
