If you live long enough, you will face trials, trauma, difficulties, maybe even anguish-producing developments in your life. It's part of living in a fallen world. We generally respond to these developments with a number of negative, if quite human, emotions, like anxiety, worry, fear, despair or desperation, discouragement, fear, and more. Americans in particular seem to be attempting to deal with problems via a virtual epidemic of opioids and other anti-depressants. These expensive, addictive, and dangerous drugs may deaden pain but do not provide a long-term solution to healing and peace.
In Scripture, the Lord instructs us "do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation" with thanksgiving make our prayers known to the Lord and he will grant us peace that surpasses understanding. This is a phenomenal and powerful promise.
The shepherd king David knew this. In the Psalms he loudly laments his trials and fears, and he always goes to the Lord for refuge and peace.
