Dealing with Disappointment at Work

Scripture:
Proverbs 13:12 — “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Devotional:
Disappointment is part of life in a fallen world. The promotion didn’t happen. The project fell through. The job you wanted went to someone else. The changes you prayed for never came. Proverbs acknowledges this reality: when hope is delayed or denied, the heart does feel sick.

God doesn’t dismiss that pain. He invites you to bring it to Him honestly. Disappointment can either drive you away from God or draw you closer to Him. When you pour out your heart, He meets you with comfort, perspective, and renewed hope—not necessarily in a specific outcome, but in His goodness.

Your ultimate hope is not in career milestones but in Christ. That doesn’t mean your desires don’t matter; it means they are safest when placed in His hands. He knows what is best for you, and He is able to redeem even deep disappointments into growth, redirection, and unexpected blessings.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What work-related disappointment still weighs on your heart?
  2. Have you fully brought that disappointment to God in honest prayer?
  3. How can you shift your hope from specific outcomes to God Himself?

Prayer:
Father, You know the disappointments I carry. I give them to You today. Heal my heart, renew my hope, and help me trust that You are good, even when things don’t turn out the way I wanted. Amen.
